<論説>マキァヴェリ研究史に関する一考察

Abstract

マキァヴェリ研究の道はなお程遠く、今日依然として一種のパズルであると言わざるを得ないが、とくに最近約二十年間におよぶあらゆる角度からの真摯な研究-その何れもマキァヴェリ研究上の大間題であるが-を基盤として、今後漸次豊かな綜合化が促進されるであろうことを期待してやまない。近来たとえばグラムシの如く、マキァヴェリを社会経済史の視点から捉えようとする新たな傾向が見られ、今やマキァヴェリ研究はある意味で一転機を画するものと注目されているが、他方では思想、文化、哲学、史学史、文学、言語学、倫理学などの視角からの検討なり再考察が活発に進められている現状で、恰もルネサンス概念論争ならぬマキァヴェリ研究に関する一種根掘り論者の百花燎乱たる登場ともいうべき観がある。このようなマキァヴェリ学界の現時点に立って、前記の如く過去二十数年間の数々のマキァヴェリ研究の動向を、とくにその政治思想の路線に照明をあてて、私なりに且つできる限り批判的に取り上げ、各研究者の見解を比較論述しつつ、併せて微力ながら若干将来への展望をも試みてみたい。

We cannot refrain from recognizing that the distance of the way to the study of Machiavelli is far greater and remains a sort of puzzle and we are anxious to accelerate gradually a rich synthesis hereafter as a basis of serious studies--each is the great problem for the research of Machiavelli--from all angles especially for about 20 years of late. Recently a new tendency to grasp Machiavelli from the standpoint of social and economic history like Gramsci is considered as an epochmaking one in a certoin meaning of the study of Machiavelli. On the other hand, its present active studies and reexaminations from the standpoints of idea, culture, philosophy, historians' history, literature, philology, ethics and so on look like the grand entrance of so-called crossexaminers on Machiavelli's research just as the idealistic dispute of Renaissance. On the present standpoint of this Machiavelli's researching circle we are to study by ourselves and critically his political idea with our comparison and criticism of each student during the past 20 years, adding our future outlook to do our poor best.
