<論説>ミルトンにおけるピューリタニズムと自由 : 寛容思想の形成にふれて

Abstract

マックス・ウェーバーによれば、ジョン・ミルトンはピューリタンの「変り種」としてピューリタニズムの枠から除外されている。一方、ミルトンは多くの論者によってヒューマニストの系列で理解されてもいる。これらの理解はいずれも、ミルトンが人間性を肯定し、理性を重視し、自由を主張してやまなかったことによっている。本稿は、ミルトンの思想を、かれの宗教改革論文、『アレオパギティカ』、『寛容論』を中心に検討し、かれの思想的立場を明らかにせんとするものである。結論的に言えば、ミルトンにおいては、ピューリタニズムとルネサンス・ヒューマニズムは二律背反的なものとして考えられているというよりは、むしろ、ミルトンの神は超越的な存在としての神ではなく、人間的なものに内在化しつつそれを内から変革し、それゆえに人間を実践につき動かす神であった。ここに、ウェーバーの理解するピューリタニズムとは別の、実践的ピューリタニズムをみることができると考えるものである。

By Max Weber, John Milton was excluded from Puritanism as a peculiar person, Einspänner. On the other hand, Milton has been regarded as one sort of the humanist thinkers. These estimations are chiefly depended on the facts that Milton considered humanity right, attached importance to human reason, and laid stress on liberty. This essay is to make clear the position of his thought by the examination through his Reformation tracts. "Areopagitica", and "Of True Religion". In short, Milton did not accept Puritanism and Renaissance Humanism as the alternatives, and his God was neither transcendental nor metaphysical, but such as functioned within a human being, then transformed him from within, and therefore move him to do practical action. Thus we can see another practical and active Puritanism in Milton, as distinguished from Weber's Puritanism.
