dc.description.abstractインドの大叙事詩『マハーバーラタ』第14巻「アシュヴァメーダの巻」は, 同族戦争の後に行われる主人公ユディシュティラ王のアシュヴァメーダ祭を主題としている。この祭では, 供犠にする馬を事前に一年間放浪させ, それを軍勢が追跡・守護することになっている。叙事詩では, その儀礼を題材とする挿話「祭馬追跡譚」が織り込まれ, この巻のハイライトとなっている。注目すべきは, この挿話の内容が, 仏典に現れる転輪王の代表的説話「輪宝追跡譚」に類似することである。「輪宝追跡譚」は, 仏教の理想的君主である転輪王が, 天の輪宝を軍勢とともに追跡し, かつ同時に, 武力を用いることなくただ威徳によって四方を平定する説話である。叙事詩と仏典, 双方の物語には主に次の共通点が見られる。(1)「追跡される対象(祭馬/輪宝)が東・南・西・北の順に大地を巡回する」, (2)「追跡者が行く先々で他国の王たちを帰服させる」, そして(3)「諸王に対し『殺されるべきではない』(パーリ語 na hantabbo/サンスクリット語 nahantavyās)という王の言葉が繰り返し語られる」という三つである。これらの共通点を手掛かりに, 本稿では諸文献の比較を通じて, 仏典の「輪宝追跡譚」が叙事詩の「祭馬追跡譚」に影響を及ぼしていたことを明らかにする。さらに, 叙事詩作者が仏教説話の要素を取り入れた背景を探るため, 『マハーバーラタ』第14巻の主題, つまり「戦争の生き残りたちが抱える怨嗟と悔恨を鎮める」というテーマに目を向ける。結論として, 叙事詩作者が, 「武力を用いず徳力によって人々を帰順させる」という仏教的「転輪王」の観念を反映させることで, ユディシュティラの人物像を物語のテーマに即したものへと発展させたことを推論する。ja
dc.description.abstractYudhisthira's Aśvamedha depicted in the Āśvamedhika-Parvan (ĀśvP) of the Mahābhārata (MBh) is characterised by the long episode of chasing the sacrificial horse, in which Arjuna as the chief of horse guards often fights against the bereaved kin of Kauravas, and finally subjugates them by expressing a merciful message from King Yudhisthira. The most remarkable thing in our discussion is that the horsechasing episode in the ĀśvP shows some similarities to an episode of Cakravartin found in some early Buddhist texts: (1) the monarch tours in all directions while chasing the royal symbol (horse or cakra 'wheel'); (2) the monarch subjugates the kings in all directions; (3) the monarch repeatedly expresses his merciful message with the same word "not to be killed" (Pa. na hantabbo/Skt. na hantavyās). Based upon some examinations, including the comparison with the above-mentioned Buddhist texts, we may suppose that the horse-chasing episode in the ĀśvP borrowed its outer frame from some sort of the cakra-chasing episode in the Buddhist tradition, which was circulated at the time of compiling the ĀśvP. On the other hand, the story of ĀśvP focuses on the "peace of survivors' minds". Yudhisthira's Aśvamedha itself has the function of purifying his all sins. The remaining issue is "appeasing the grudge of bereaved opponents after war", and the horse-chasing episode depicts on how Yudhisthira accomplishes this difficult task. The cakrachasing episode in the Buddhist tradition was probably an important source of the entire plot of the horsechasing episode in the ĀśvP, and it provided also the conceptual basis of Yudhisthira's figure in the ĀśvP, viz. the "merciful ruler" who appeases the grudge of opponents with his own virtue.en
