Abstract

Throughout the Muromachi period, a variety of rituals were regularly performed by a Buddhist monk at a settled place within the shogunal residence, ceremonially aimed at protecting the Shogun from harm. Despite their importance, until now, the monk as well as the structures related to the ceremonies have benn hardly examined from an academic perspective. It is the purpose of this article to examine the character of the prayer-room which was the scene of such Shogun-preserving ceremonies, and related facilities used during the incantation, and finally to consider the prayer-room itself as a place for social conversation.
