Abstract

This article introduces the Hebrew medical manuscript T-S K14.42 discovered in the Cairo Genizah, which addresses fever. The manuscript's most remarkable feature is the author's mention of various medical and philosophical authorities, including Aristotle, Galen, Ibn Sīnā, Ibn Rushd, Maimonides, and Bernard de Gordon. However, we do not know the title or author's name because many leaves including the title page and introduction have been lost. It is surmised that the original version was written between the end of the 14th century and the 15th century by a Jewish physician on the Iberian Peninsula, in Provence, or Italy, given that the author consults Hebrew translations made after the end of the 14th century and that this work is based on the tradition of Hebrew translation of Arabic and Latin books characteristic of these regions. One notable feature of T-S K14.42 is the introduction of Ibn Rushd's physics into medical theory. The author of this medical book insists that sunlight generates heat on a person's head and causes an ephemeral fever. Earlier physicians such as Ibn Sīnā admitted that the heat of the sun could cause an ephemeral fever, but did not state that sunlight created the heat, because light is not a substance that affects corporeal objects, according to Aristotelian physics. The author's statement is based on Ibn Rushd, who insists that sunlight causes heat in his middle commentary on Meteorology. This is an example of the author's vast knowledge of medieval Hebrew philosophy.
