抄録: | This paper purposes to elucidate the philosophical reflections in Toshihiko Izutsu's Metaphysics of Consciousness (Ishiki no Keijijōgaku) from the perspective of the multilayered structures of being and consciousness. The paper first explains the multilayered structures of being and consciousness and describes the philosophical significance of mysticism as the methodological basis of Izutsu's conception of oriental philosophy as detailed in A Fountainhead of Islamic Philosophy (Islam Tetsugaku no Genzo). The paper subsequently elucidates his analyses of the semantic structures of shinnyo (真如, thusness), shin (心, mind), and alayashiki (アラヤ識, store consciousness). It further illuminates his unique attempt to translate the word shin, a Buddhist term, as ishiki (意識, consciousness), a modern Japanese word. According to Izutsu, this attempt denoted his experiment with intercultural semantics and triggered the exchange of kunjū (熏習, perfume) between the terms shin and ishiki, interculturally extending the semantic field of ishiki to incorporate the connotations of shin. The paper finally highlights the correlations between the multilayered structures constituted by the words and the preceding configurations described as Izutsu's methodological foundations. |
