上海フランス租界と関西日仏学館 --第七代館長グロボワ(Charles Grosbois) を中心に--

Abstract

関西日仏学館(Institut franco-japonais du Kansaï) は1927年設立当初から上海に注目され，現地のフランス語新聞Le Journal de Shanghai(1927-1945)にも度々紹介された。とりわけ1936年5月，学館が京都市内に移転された際は，多くの写真を含む特集記事が紙面4ページにわたり掲載された(1936年6月14日)。翌年には東京日仏会館についての特集も見られる(1937年1月17日)。これらの日仏文化交流の場を上海と繋げたのは，すなわち上海フランス租界の存在であった。そして30年以上も租界の教育文化界を牽引したシャルル・グロボワ(Charles Grosbois, 1893-1972，中国名は「高博愛」)は，戦後日本に渡り，関西日仏学館館長を務めたことも，偶然ではない出来事だったと思われる。ソルボンヌで古典文学を学び，第一次世界大戦に参戦して重傷を負い，右手を失ったグロボワは，1918年頃上海に渡り，フランス租界公董局所属校の校長や公董局教育処の処長などを長年務めた。同時に中国のフランス留学運動にも関わり，またアリアンス・フランセーズの中国総代表として，フランス語教育と中仏間の文化交流に尽力した。1953年から1959年帰国するまでは関西日仏学館館長として，戦争で荒廃していた関西のフランス語教育の復興と，日仏間の文化交流にも貢献した。しかし今となっては上海史研究の専門家さえ，その名を知る者はほとんどいない。本論は長らく歴史に埋もれた上述の事実を，仏・中・日三ヶ国の一次資料に基づいて明らかにする試みである。それと同時にかつてはフランス〜上海〜京都を巡る文化交流のネットワークが存在していた事実を浮き彫りにしたい。

Charles Grosbois (1893-1972) used to be a key person both of the French Concession in Shanghai and theInstitut franco-japonais du Kansaï. A Sorbonne graduate in classical literature, he went to war and lost his right hand. In 1918, heca meto Shanghai as a professor of the French School, and was later appointed the director of the school and the general representativeof Alliance Françaisein China, which soon let him join the movement of Going to Francefor Work-&-Study Program (留法勤工倹学運動). From 1933 to 1943 Grosbois also worked as the director of the Education Department of the French Concession, where he greatly contributed to promoting French education and cultural exchanges. He left China in 1951, then cameto Kyoto in 1953 to becomethedire ctor of theInstitut franco-japonais du Kansaï, wherehea gain did his best to promote French education and cultural exchanges. Earning theChine sena meof “高博愛” (Gao boʼai) -- 高(Gao) is a very common family namein China, and thefirst name 博愛(boʼai) means fraternity -- Ch. Grosbois devoted ove r 40 years of his life to Chinese and Japanese people. Nowadays however, even Shanghai history scholars know littleabout him. Based on French, Chinese and Japanese historical documents, this article will describe Grosboisʼs contribution in detail, and shed light on thefunctionin g of a cultural network between Paris, Shanghai, and Kyoto during thefirst half of the 20th century.
