抄録: This paper aims at explicating the fundamental ideas that M. Sartre describes in his two books, L'imagination and L'imaginaire. In fact, since Descartes, many philosophers and psychologists have consecrated their studies to the problem of image. Also in the nineteenth century France, after the psychology of synthesis introduced by Ribot, Bergson established--for the first time in history-- metaphysics of image. The phenomenological psychology of imagination has been formed in a sense by developing and criticizing these preceding studies; the present writer most highly appreciates the method of Husserl to determine the properties of image. The image is, according to Sartre, a consciousness which is given immediately to the reflection. Only the act of reflection gives us what he calls the essence of the image. Furthermore, as the. imagination is a great function of consciousness to create a world of unrealities, the dominant characteristic of the image lies in the negation of the actual existence of objects. Therefore, the present writer made an effort chiefly to clarify the meaning of this negative positional act of the imaginative consciousness.
