| dc.description.abstract | Seki Takakazu, Takebe Kata'akira and Takebe Katahiro compiled the 20 volumes encyclopedia called the Taisei Sankei for 28 years (1683-1710). The first three volumes treat elementary arithmetic. We will review these volumes with special attention to Volume 3. This volume can be divided in two parts. We will show how fundamental rules of arithmetic were conceived and expressed in the traditional Chinese format of problem-answer-procedure in the first part of Volume 3. We will discuss then how Takebe Kataakira constructed the second part of Volume 3 on the basis of Seki Takakazu's two notes, the Kaihō-sanshiki and the Kaihō-honhen-no-hō. | en |
