<論文>一つになりたいヘミングウェイ --“A Canary for One”をめぐる孤独な雄たち--

Abstract

アーネスト・ヘミングウェイ(1899-1961)は四人の女性と結婚した. 1926年8月に一人目の妻ハドリー・リチャードソンと破局し, 1927年5月10日に二人目の妻ポーリーン・ファイファーと結婚するまでの間に, 彼は短編“A Canary for One”の執筆に取り掛かった. 先行研究は, 伝記的事実との関連に注目し, 作品最後で「パリに終着して別居する」夫婦がヘミングウェイ夫妻と重なりあうと指摘してきた. 本稿は, 性の観点から考察し, 男性の苦悩に焦点を当てることで, 雄らしさを欠く雄鳥「一羽のカナリア」が両性具有のヘミングウェイ自身だと提示する. そして, 多義的なタイトルについて新たな解釈を提案する.

Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) was married four times. After the collapse of his first marriage to Hadley Richardson in August 1926, and before his second marriage to Pauline Pfeiffer on May 10, 1927, he started to write a short story, “A Canary for One” (1927). Scholars show interest in its biographical relevance as the narrator and his wife who “were returning to Paris to set up separate residences” at the end of the work are confirmed to be representative of Hemingway and Hadley. This article, by examining sexual relationships and especially by focusing on male anguish, offers a possibility that “a canary, ” a male bird socially and linguistically lacking masculinity, also represents androgynous Hemingway. It then posits a new interpretation of the ambiguous title.
