<論文>多言語社会ブータンにおける若者と英語 --英語借用語に関する意識調査から--

Abstract

本研究は, ブータンの国語であるゾンカ語による会話に大量に織り込まれる英語借用語と, その結果生じた独自の「言語モード」(Grosjean 2008 : 39)に対する, 若者たちの意識に着目する. ブータンにおいて教授言語として採用された英語の使用が, 英語もゾンカ語も堪能な若い世代にとっていかなる意味をもつものとなりつつあるかを, 「指標性(indexicality)」(Ochs 1990)をキーワードに考察する. 教師と学生を対象に英語借用語に対する意識調査をおこない, 世代間の相違に着目した. 調査からは, むしろ英語借用語を多用する若者世代に国語に対する規範意識がより強く示された一方で, ゾンカ語の翻訳語の開発が進み, ある程度語彙選択の余地が生まれるなか, 若者たちからは, 英語借用語の修辞効果やイメージ効果, 仲間内での一体感や親しみ易さの創出等, コミュニケーション戦略として英語借用語を意図的に活用する傾向も示唆された. 共通語の普及を目標に言語の実用的側面に焦点があった時代の教育を受けた教師世代と異なり, 現在の若者たちは, ゾンカ語を国家アイデンティティの核とする国民教育を強化した教育を受けている. 言語の象徴的価値の強調は国語であるゾンカ語に対する規範意識を育んだ一方で, 言語をアイデンティティと結びつける言語観は, 幼い頃から英語を身近にして育つ若者たちに, 英語を個人や世代のアイデンティティの基盤とする思考を派生させたと考えられる. 英語の使用が一部の年代や社会層に限定される過渡期的な時代を背景に, 英語借用語の使用は, 若者たちにとって他世代との差異化を図り, 仲間意識を高める, 社会的アイデンティティを示す指標として機能しつつある.

This study focuses on young people's awareness of the large amount of English borrowed words woven into Bhutan's national language, Dzongkha, and the resulting unique “language mode” (Grosjean 2008 : 39), using “indexicality” (Ochs 1990) as a keyword. The awareness survey of English loanwords this study conducted for teachers and students has clarified that although the younger generation had a stronger sense of norm for the national language, they tended to intentionally use English loanwords as a communication strategy, being aware of the rhetorical effect and image effect of English loanwords, and their function to create a sense of unity and familiarity among peers. The education that emphasizes the symbolic value of the national language, Dzongkha, encouraged young people to think about linking language to identity, which seemed to have led young people to think that English is the basis of individual and generational identities. In a transitional era in which the use of English is limited to some age groups and social groups, the use of English loanwords is functioning as an indicator of social identity for young people.
