<研究ノート>日本語文献におけるカライ派ユダヤ教の位置付け --アラブ・イスラーム世界におけるユダヤ教の〈正統〉--

Abstract

本稿は日本のユダヤ研究における新しい研究領域を提示し, その研究対象を従来とは別の角度から紹介することを目的とする. 本稿が着目するカライ派ユダヤ教を主題とした研究は, 世界的にも少なく, 日本では未開拓の領域である. そのためカライ派研究を志す上で必要不可欠となる予備調査として, 日本語で出版されているユダヤ関連の書籍を分析し, 同派がいかに位置付けられているのかを考察した. そして日本語文献に浮びあがるカライ派像のほとんどが〈正統〉に対抗する〈異端〉として否定的イメージを背負っていることを確認した. 本稿は, カライ派を〈異端〉として短略的に評価せず, 別の角度から再考することを目指した. そこで政治思想史家である丸山眞男が定義づけたL正統とO正統の区別を用いて, 同派の立場を検討した. そして中世における多数派であったラビ・ユダヤ教に対抗した, もう一つの〈正統〉としてカライ派を位置付けた. こうした再検討を経て, カライ派と正面から向き合う準備ができ, ユダヤ教内部で同派が担った位置をより正確に描写できるのである.

This article investigates how Japanese publications portray a mediaeval Jewish denomination called Karaite Judaism or Karaism. Since scholars have considered Karaism as heresy or sect, it has been a peripheral subject among researchers, particularly in Japan. This paper engages with publications on Judaism written in or translated to Japanese. The review shows that most of them negatively portrayed Karaism solely as a heresy against conventional Rabbinic Judaism. Altering this dismissive attitude is essential to examine Karaism without fallacy. This article applies the classification of religious tradition presented by Masao Maruyama, a Japanese political scientist, to reassess Karaism not with preconception but with integrity. Maruyama distinguishes orthodoxy and legitimacy that are both translated as “Seitō” (正統) in Japanese. By applying his definition of seitō, we could decently judge the denominational movements within Judaism under the Arab-Islamic power. Accordingly, while Rabbinism claimed its legitimacy by its oral tradition, Karaism maintained its orthodoxy by renouncing Rabbinic tradition and emphasising scripturalism. This article recommends not to describe Karaism as heresy and proposes a new approach to studying Karaite Judaism.
