明朝と豐臣政權交涉の一齣 --明朝兵部發給「箚付」が語るもの--

Abstract

In the middle of Renchen War (壬辰戰爭 1592-1598), peace negotiations were carried out between the Ming court and the Toyotomi government. During that period, zhafu 箚付 documents reporting the bestowal by the Ming Ministry of War of military officer titles on vassals of Toyotomi Hideyoshi were issued. This paper employs the extant zhafu addressed to Mōri Terumoto 毛利輝元 and Uesugi Kagekatsu 上杉景勝 as the main source materials to discuss the following two key points. The first point is in regard to the intention of the Ming Ministry of War in issuing these documents to the vassals of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Previous research has argued that the fact that the Ming court announced the conferment of military titles through such documents was an expression of contempt toward the Toyotomi government. The Ming court, however, placed great importance on precedent, and such a precedent existed in the Longqing Peace Conference (1571) following the Altan Khan incident, making it clear that the response to the vassals of Hideyoshi was in strict accord with propriety. The second aims to clarify the purpose of the excising and correction of parts of the texts of the two documents, which show evidence of having been revised. Earlier scholarship has interpreted this editing as evidence of revisions that the Toyotomi government forced upon the Ming Ministry of War. This paper argues that this interpretation is not supported by the evidence and that the modifications were made by the Toyotomi government.
