Abstract

Immediately after his debut, Haruki Murakami would often be discussed as autistic. However, as Murakami gradually expanded his artistic endeavors, it became clear that his personality did not fit into the image of autism at that time, and eventually, this trend ended. Later, autism was expanded into the concept of autism spectrum disorder with diverse phenotypes, and in light of this clinical trial, Murakami's personality can be considered to fall in the gray area of this spectrum. This study approaches the enigmatic writer Murakami by implementing a new experimental method of pathography called Tojisha-hihyo (reversed pathography) and salutography. Today, neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders, are being reinterpreted as neurodiversity, an expression of the diversity of humanity. This paper looks for this diversity in Murakami. However, it should be noted that this work is not an attempt to diagnose the novelist from a pathographical perspective. The author of the paper has himself been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder and writes this essay as an expression of secret solidarity.
