<研究ノート>英語で表現する力の育成を図る指導の工夫 --「イングリッシュ・シャワー」の効果的な活用--

Abstract

This paper reports the practice of fostering “the ability to express oneself in English” at a private school that provides integrated junior and senior high school education. In order to develop the ability, classes called “English shower” are taught once a week, aiming to give the students a large amount of input in English and to elicit output from them. The students learn in small groups with one or two foreign or Japanese teachers. The classes focus on speaking activities that are linked to students' regular “English Language” classes and provide writing tasks as homework. The activities and tasks are provided depending on the differences in the students' English proficiency levels. As a result of implementing these classes, this paper highlights the fact that students have been acquiring the skills to ask for clarification, and developing their attitude to express oneself without being afraid of making mistakes, which are both necessary aspects to foster “the ability to express oneself in English”. In addition, for future practice, it also points out that activities need to be devised based on the situation especially for students who are becoming less motivated in acquiring basic knowledge and skills.
