抄録: The history of money during the Jin 金 dynasty can be divided into two periods, one before and one after the 1190's. This paper deals with the system during the former period. The monetary policy of the Jin dynasty is assumed to have inherited most of copper coins of the Northern Song 北宋. The attack of Hailingwang 海陵王 on the Song had rapidly reduced the central government's cash holdings. In the private sector, there was a serious shortage of cash, but, on the other hand, local governments held massive cash reserves. I cannot agree with the view that sees the cash shortage as having been caused by the development of commerce. Jiaochao 交鈔, which was a feature of the Jin monetary system, was a cash deposit certificate used in the former period as a remittance draft. The jiaochao was not paper money. Tongqian 銅錢 and jiaochao acted as financial means for securing military goods, not for mediating the development of commercial transactions.
