Among the historical records describing the invasion of Korea by Qing Taizong Hongtaiji in 1636-1637, the Byeongjalok 丙子錄, written by the Korean La Manggab 羅萬甲, is the most famous. Many editions of the book were produced, and it exists in Korea and Japan. However, in order to know the history of the Joseon Dynasty since the 17th century, we must consult the Joseonwangjo Sillok 朝鮮王朝實錄, a chronicle, the Seungjeongwong Ilgi 承政院日記, records of the official scribes of the king, and the Bipyeonsa Deunglok 備邊司謄錄, a record of the highest-ranking deliberative body. Although SJW Ilgi has the most detailed description of the Byeongja War, the existence of original historical sources in the form of journals has now become clear. One of these sources is the Namhan Ilgi 南漢日記, which was thought to have been written by Seok Jihyeong 石之珩. However, this diary was not written by Seok Jihyeong, it was a diary written by Juseo, the official scribe of the SJW. Twelve manuscripts of this diary have been preserved. As research progresses, the number of manuscripts is likely to increase further. These manuscripts can be divided into two categories: those from the Seoul National University Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies and those from the National Library of Korea. From an analysis of the entry for the 27th day of the twelfth month of 1636, it is probable that the version held by the National Library was created with reference to the book held by the Kyujanggak. The other source is the SJW Ilgi of Yi Dojang 李道長, which was created at the same time as the Namhan Ilgi. This journal was published by the Academy of Korean Studies Jangseogak in 2010. Because it is a personal diary, it has less information than the Namhan Ilgi. However, it sometimes contains information that is not found in the Namhan Ilgi. In particular, the entry for 14th day of the twelfth month of 1636 found at the beginning of this record is missing from the Namhan Ilgi. From this source, we can learn in detail how Injo escaped from Seoul at that time. It can be anticipated that study of these historical records will further elucidate the facts of the Byeongja War.en
