Abstract

本稿は，魔法界の描写に先立って(魔法を使えない)ダーズリー家でおこる「いじめ」の頓挫 --｢いじめ」られている側の視点に立つと復位-- を提示する．まずは，『賢者の石』における学校名から「石」と「金属」をめぐる優劣関係を指摘し，「岩場」におけるダーズリー家の敗北による優劣関係の解体を示す．そして，『アズカバンの囚人』における贈り物とダーズリー氏の形容詞から「犬」と「牛」をめぐる優劣関係を指摘し，「牛いじめ」を読み取った後，ここでも優劣関係が解体されていることを提示する．その後，「いじめ(る者)」(bully)表象に焦点を絞り，作者J. K. ローリングの緻密な作品創作に光を当て，シリーズ冒頭の意義を示す試みとなる．

This study analyses the failures of ʻbullyingʼ in the non-magical Dursley family, prior to the magical world. First, doubts are established about the superiority of ʻmetalʼ over ʻstoneʼ at the Dursleysʼ house in The Philosopherʼs Stone, which is depicted in Harryʼs and Dudleyʼs school names, ʻStonewall Highʼ and ʻSmeltingsʼ respectively. The Dursleysʼ failure on the ʻRockʼ symbolically denies the superiority of ʻmetalʼ and represents the restoration of ʻstoneʼ. Second, this study casts doubts on the superiority of ʻbullʼ over ʻdogʼ at the Dursleysʼ house in the third volume, the Prisoner of Azkaban. The relationship is depicted as a ʻbeefyʼ man, Mr Dursley, and ʻa box of dog biscuitsʼ, a Christmas present for Harry. By way of ʻbullbaitingʼ, the study denies the superiority of ʻbullʼ and represents the restoration of ʻdogʼ in its stead. Through the lens of ʻbullyingʼ, the article then illuminates J. K. Rowlingʼs intricate portrayal of the early events in the Harry Potter series.
