dc.description.abstract | This study investigates crime and accident coverage in Egyptian journalism, aiming to analyze reporting patterns and audience targeting strategies. The analysis encompasses 1, 020 news articles and 1, 246 press photographs from nine Egyptian newspapers, categorized into three journalistic orientations: national (government-controlled), partisan (owned by opposition parties), and private (business-owned or joint-stock). The study focuses on 2008, a late period of Mubarak's rule characterized by significant transformations in the media landscape and economic challenges, such as inflation-induced price increases, social unrest, and intensified repression of political freedoms. The findings reveal that reporting strategies across the three journalistic orientations were influenced by government censorship, ownership structures, and each outlet's editorial stance. These results underscore the diverse mechanisms through which media content shapes public sentiment and reinforces or challenges loyalty to Egypt's political system. | en |
