対照法によるレトリックの相乗効果 --単純な構文構造を用いて複雑な表現効果を生み出す--

Abstract

文彩は、言語の通常の用法から巧みに逸脱するレトリックの技術であり、形式的な逸脱を含む文彩はスキームとよばれている。本稿はスキームの1つである対照法に注目し、対照法が他の文彩との組み合わせによって相乗効果を生み出すことを明らかにした。本稿で取りあげた実例の分析結果から、対照法は少なくとも、堆積法、類義区別、隠喩、直喩、逆説の5つの文彩と共起することが分かった。対照法とは語句を対照することで概念を対照する文彩である。対照法に用いられる構文構造は単純であるが、構文の共通構造によって意味の対照性を示す汎用性の高い機能を備えている。対照法の基本機能は形式を整えることによって意味を強めることであり、この機能がしばしば他の文彩の機能を強化する。本稿の考察から、意味の文彩は形式の文彩との組み合わせによって相乗効果を発揮するということが示唆される。

Figurative language relies on rhetorical techniques that deviate artfully from conventional language use. It is traditionally divided into two types: tropes and schemes. While tropes, such as metaphors, which involve conceptual deviations, are broadly recognized for their influence on emotion, thought, and action, schemes, which involve structural deviations, have received much less attention in linguistic studies. This paper focused on antithesis, a scheme, as a basic device for generating rhetorical synergy, especially when combined with other rhetorical figures. Based on the analysis of numerous real-world examples, antitheses can be used alongside at least five other rhetorical figures: accumulation, paradiastole, metaphor, simile, and paradox. Antithesis effectively juxtaposes opposing ideas through parallel lexical structures. Although its grammatical construction is simple, its effect is powerful, as it highlights the target with a standard. The basic function of antitheses is to emphasize meaning through structured form, often reinforcing other rhetorical functions. These findings imply that, more broadly, conceptual figures can produce rhetorical synergy when combined with structural figures.
