This volume is the proceedings of the International Symposium on China's Economic Development and Structural Change in East Asia held in Kyoto from 8 to 9 February, 2003 in commemoration of Shanghai Center for Economic Research. Kyoto University has had a great long tradition of China studies, including literature, history, and philosophy since the establishment of the Faculty of Literature in 1906. However, Kyoto University has not produced good research results concerning China's economy. Now China is called the 'world factory.' It is certain that in this century China should become the center of Asia while should have influence on the World economy. It is a great pleasure to have established the Shanghai Center for Economic Research on December 5, 2002, and a Shanghai branch in the Fudan University campus on January 9, 2003, in order to study the contemporary Chinese economy. We have a plan to do joint-research projects on the Chinese economy with Chinese scholars as well as to exchange professors. It is a famous episode that Zhou Enlai wanted to study Marxian economics under the direction of Prof. Hajime Kawakami at Kyoto University when he was in Japan during the 1917-1919 period. Now on the contrary, We established a Shanghai branch to enable many Japanese young researchers and students to study the Chinese economy. We would hope they will produce excellent research works in the near future. We will have a plan to hold three international symposiums. So this is the first volume. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the contributors and participants in this Symposium.en
