dc.description.abstractAn X-ray diffractometer of special design has been constructed in which the incident beam and the diffracted beam lie in a vertical plane and the sample holder is a horizontally placed thin plate of carborundum to be directly heated electrically. The sample can be heated safely up to 1200℃ either in vacuum or in an appropriate gaseous atmosphere. In this diffractometer calcium carbide either pure or mixed with calcium fluoride amounting to 17 percent of the mixture was exposed to nitrogen at atmospheric pressure at high temperatures. It has been established that calcium cyanamide, the reaction product, is still solid at 1040℃ but forms a liquid phase already at 1010℃, when calcium fluoride is added, a fact significant in elucidating the well-known accelerating action of calcium fluoride.en
