| 抄録: | The circumstances surrounding sudden death (SD) and its cause as reported in newspaper articles between 1970 and 1989 are retrospectively studied. In total, 223 cases of SD were reported. In children, sudden infant death syndrome was the most frequent cause of SD. In young adults SD was frequently encountered during exercise, while in the middle age at rest. SD was five times more common in males than in females, and approximately 70% of SD was due to cardiovascular diseases usually with fatal outcome within one hour after onset of symptoms. Thus, in order to prevent SD it is of utmost importance to educate the public to start cardiopulmonary resuscitation at sight as well as to have regular medical checkups to rule out latent cardiovascular diseases. |
