Both working and playing are essential elements of human life, when it is considered holistically according to the definition of "health" found in the World Health Association charter. However, in modern times, the individual is confronted with loss of identitiy while, paradoxically, civilization progresses. The individual is disconnected from both work and play: we continue to work, but only in order to take a vacation or to earn money, and not to realize ourselves in and through working; we continue to play still, but only to escape the demands of modern life, and not to find fulfillment or to cultivate higher pursuits. This essential change in the motivations underlying working and playing has a profound impact on our cultural and social creativity, which is dependent on our capacity to work and to play in the authentic sense.en
