Abstract

Orthopedic problems are prevalent among elders. For example, an estimated 30% of elders in U.S.A. fracture a hip by 90 years of age 9). Hip fractures usually require an open reduction and internal fixiation. Elders may be hospitalized for a operation and rehabilitation and possibly being placed temporarily or permanently in a care facility. Elders with fractures may be able to go home as a result of surgical treatment and rehabilitation. The primary goal of treatment intervention is to improve the quality of life of elders with fractures. Specific goals working with medical doctors and therapists include maintaining joint mobility, preventing deformity, maintaining muscle strength, improving functional ability, maintaining a healthy balance of rest and activity, modifying performance of activities, and improving psychosocial acceptance.
