Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyze 'preposition stranding' from both semantic and historical points of view. Our main concern is with the analysis of the phenomenon in terms of semantic interpretability based on language processing, and with an attempt, in historical perspective, to solve the problem of preposition stranding to which little attention has been given. The cases we will deal with might be exceptional or peripheral phenomena in syntax, but throughout the analysis of such cases from a semantic point of view, we will find the real conditioning factor of preposition stranding.
