Abstract: As with several other countries of the developing world, Nigeria has recently established a national women's program, aimed at a instituting and coordinating development activities for rural and urban women from diverse cultural backgrounds. Thus far, the wives of government officials have directed the effort. Seeking to assess the practicality of such an approach to the plight to African women, this study explores the Nigerian program's achievements thus far, its shortcomings, and its prospects for the future, including its impact on the position of Nigerian women, especially the poor.
