抄録: This paper aims to understand the characteristics of planting Grevillea robusta, a popular exotic tree in east Africa, and to know the conditions stimulating its diffusion process among rural households, taking as an example north-sentral Tanzania. It makes clear that the process was promoted by various time-specific incentives and motivations, such as introduction of coffee growing, need for securing right on the farm during the villagization, enforcement of new agricultural policy, and free distribution of seedlings. The paper emphasizes the importance of multilateral perspective to understand diffusion process of tree planting, from the viewpoint of people's responses to secure and maintain their livelihood in the process of rural change.
