Abstract

An analysis is presented for the dynamic deflection of an infinite rigid-plastic beamunder a pulse load distributed over some range of the beam axis. Small deformation theoryyields the results where the final configuration of the beam axis is determined explicitlyfor a purely impulsive load and rectangular pulse loads. It is seen that the deflection getsmore concentrated near the loading range as the load duration gets shorter and as theloading range gets narrower. In case the load magnitude is smaller tlaaaa a certainmultiple of the ratio of the fully plastic moment to the length of the loading range, thedeflection greatly depends on the load magnitude, but for a larger value of the loadmagnitude, the deflection does not depend on the load magnitude significantly, and theloading can be approximated as impulsive with a good accuracy.
