Abstract

The significance of damping and energy absorption of structures and structural elementsunder earthquake excitation is first described, and then the details of these phenomena are discussedm relation to the equivalent viscous damping coefficient. Several mathematical models represent-ing the hysteretic behavior of materials, members, connections and frames are introduced. Thestate-of-art is outlined for each of these subjects, referring to the recent publications. Finally, someimportant problems are indicated.
