dc.description.abstractThis paper reports on the continuation of experimental studies for prevention of in-undation by storm surges in the rivers and canals of Osaka City. By use of a hydraulicmodel, a reliable estimate has been sought for the water pile-up which will result fromthe operation of the five planned storm surge prevention gates. The problem has beenstudied for the peak height of a storm surge and its propagation, both before and aftergate construction, with emphasis on the deformation of the surge when the gates are inoperation. Two historic storm surges and a design surge were used in the model. Cur-rent velocity and paths for both the rise and fall of surges were observed by use of floats.The relation of maximum current velocity to time duration of the surge is discussed. Theexperimental results suggest crown height limits for design of the storm surge preventiongates.en
