dc.description.abstractThere remain many problems unsolved in the application of the mathematical optimizationtechniques to the parameter identification of the series tanks model with sixteen unknown parametersfor runoff analysis. This paper discusses some of these problems fundamentally by the techniquesof numerical experiment. The results are summarized as follows:1) The chi-square criterion is generally recommended as the objective function for the pur-pose of finding a set of optimum parameters of the model.2) The efficiency of the SP method (Standardized Powell method) is sometimes affected bythe ordering of variables.3) The SP method by an optimum ordering system may be more powerful than the SDFPmethod (Standardized Davidon-Fletcher-Powell method) for the purpose.4) The true model is easily searched by using the data of drought years, but not by the onesof rainy years.5) The efficiency of the standardization system is not seriously affected by the initial set ofparameters chosen in the common sense.en
