dc.description.abstractThe fluctuating and averaged pressures at the leading edge of a rectangular cylinder normalto a smooth stream were assumed to be extrapolated from the pressure distributions on the sidesurface. The variable mean pressures for a short averaging time take place on the afterbody surfacebecause of the instabilized property of the vortex generation for b/d<1, (b: streamwise dimensionof cross section of cylinder, d: dimension normal to stream). On the other hand, the pressure actingon the cylinder with b/d>1.5 is stable in consequence of the simaltaneous reattachment near theleeward edge. It is clarified about the flow pattern around these rectangular cylinders that theinstantaneous velocity across the leading edge exceeds always the free stream velocity. Regardinga cylinder with b/d= 0.6, the vortex behind the cylinder keeps itself from divergence of the vorticityand from mixture of the counterwise vorticity.en
