Abstract: This paper describes the transverse mixing process for mass and heat injected continuously froma point source in open-channel flows. In order to derive the transverse mixing coefficient of concen-tration and temperature, experimental studies with use of salt and heated water have been made.The empirical relation between the transverse mixing coefficient Dz and hydraulic parameters isdiscussed.Judging from experimental results, it is concluded that Dz can not be correlated with theaspect ratio B/h but with the ratio of mean velocity to friction velocity U/u*, that is to say, Reynoldsnumber on smooth bed and relative roughness on rough bed.
