dc.description.abstractA new approach is proposed to simulate spontaneous rupture propagation and earthquakemotion in this study. The method is based on the nonlinear finite element method. The fault ismodeled by the joint element which makes it possible to analyze dynamic sliding phenomenon alongthe discontinuous plane in continuous medium. First, initial stress state on the fault and in thecrust at the moment when rupture breakes out is obtained by applying both the gravity and thetectonic forces. Then the nonlinear dynamic analysis is performed under the initial stress state inorder to simulate the crack propagation and the radiation wave from it. A barrier model isalso investigated. It was ascertained that the method is useful to investigate source mechanismespecially stress redistribution on and near the fault.en
