Abstract

The present study deals with the development of numerical analysis of rapidly variedunsteady flows in a flume and in a river, like bore and surge. The fundamental equationsconsist of continuity and momentum equations and are transformed into the characteristicsforms. Finite difference scheme for the method of characteristics will be improved byintroducing parabolic interpolation instead of linear interpolation. Comparative studies ofnumerical analysis with Lighthill's linear theory and hydraulic experiments have been madeon simple waves in an ideal channel and rapidly varied unsteady flow in a flume. Theresults shows that the improved method of characteristics will usefully be applied to rapidlyvaried unsteady flow in a uniform flume.
