Frank Engelund's theory of meander flow, published in 1974, marked a major advance, fromuniform bend flow to flow in truly meandering channels. The paper also contains several errors andomissions, some of which are by no means trivial. Both the achievements and the shortcomings of thework have acted to stimulate subsequent research, which is analyzed in this light. It is concludedthat a paper of sufficient elegance, that touches at the heart of the problem at hand, may includemany errors and still represent an achievement capable of stimulating the next generation of creativeresearch. The resolution of the errors flows in part from the structural elegance of the theory.en
