dc.description.abstractThe numerical method of the steady high velocity flows in open channels withgradually contracted part is shown by using the method of characteristics. Thebasic equations used here are the plane two-dimensional equations of shear flows inthe steady state. These equations are transformed into the characteristic form, which are also transformed into the finite difference equations by using the linearinterpolation method in the fixed grid system. After describing the treatment of thegradual changes of side walls in Cartesian coordinate system, the numerical analysisis performed with the same hydraulic variables of Ippen's experiment. Thecomparison of numerical results to the experimental ones of Ippen indicates that itis necessary to involve the effect of vertical acceralation in the basic equations, though the agreement of both results is good along the side wall of the contractedpart.en
