Abstract

We made a simulation analysis of the inelastic earthquake response of wooden houses builtby the use of traditional skeleton system and wood frame construction, and compared with theresponse characteristics of these houses in order to establish a general method for estimatingearthquake hazards for building structures. The earthquake responses of wooden houses aremarkedly effected by relations among the frequency characteristics of the input motion and thecharacteristics of the structure. We also made a comparison between the maximum response ofstructures estimated by our analysis and the actual damage during 1978 Miyagiken-oki earth-quake. Moreover, we estimated the earthquake damages of wooden houses both due to groundvibration and due to soil liquefaction in the city of Kyoto during hypothetical earthquakes.
