Abstract

Observations of seismic wares from quarry blasts were carried out to reverse the measuring line of 1989 explosions, from Fujiwara-cho, Mie Prefecture to Hikami-cho, Hyogo Prefecture, crossing Lake Biwa. Ten quarry blasts at the Fujiwara Mine were observed at 60 stations along the east-west line of about 120 km in length. The obtained records clearly show that the thickness of the surface layer increases by about 2 km on the west of Lake Biwa, where active faults cross the measuring line. The records also show reflected waves from deep boundaries in the middle and lower crust, which indicate that the lower crust is reflective in the wide area of the northern Kinki district.
