The caking coal (Miike, Sakito and Shin-Yubari) and non- or feebly caking coal (Namazuda, Bibai and Kaho) were tested by rational analysis and extracted with boiling pyridine, benzene and cyclohexanon at ordinary pressure and benzene under pressure. The absorption of I2 by the original coal and the extracted residual coal was investigated. The reactivity index for alkaline permanganate was measured on the pressure-benzene extracted residues. The following results were obtained: (1) Contents of cellulose and lignin in the caking coal were less than the non-caking coal. It may be thought that the former should be higher rank than the latter. (2) The amount of extract with various solvents, except pyridine, was parallel to caking power. (3) The reactivity index for alkaline permanganate to the caking coal was less than that the non-caking coal. (4) The I2 absorptive capacity of the extracted residues depended chiefly on the kind of solvents. Excepting the case of pyridine, the amount of extracts related to the absorptive capacity of each residue. Particularly, in the case of extraction with pyridine, the absorptive capacity of its residue was abnormally greater than in the other solvents. As the reason of this fact, it may be thought that pyridine has penetrated more strongly on coal surface and made it more porous. Remarkable differences between the caking and non-caking coal were not confirmed in these experiments.en
