dc.description.abstractIn order to examine the effect of press fitting of a pin (or bushing) into a hole of a link plate, various tensile loads were given to a phenolite link plate, to which some force of press fit was given beforehand and the change of the effect with load was observed by the photo-elastic method, regarding the force of press fit as a parameter. In the range of the tensile load from zero up to some value, the maximum shearing stress (σ1-σ2)/2 at the edge of the hole, the mean tensile stress σymean at the section A-B (cf. Fig. 1) passing through the centre of the hole, and the value of η* changed remarkably more slowly when the force of press fit took some value other than zero. From the stress distribution at the narrowest section C-D (cf. Fig. 1) of the plate, it was found that as the force of press fit was made heavier, the holes gave less effect to the stress distribution and the distribution approached to that when there were no holes. The above results show that in some range of a tensile load the effect of the press fit is strongly conserved to nullify the change of the stress on the plate; and suggest that in this region of the load, the possibility of maintaing a constant stress. * We have defined the quantity η as "the coefficient of the shared stress" and it means the change of the tensile stress at the plate per unit load (cf. eq. (3) in the text).en
