dc.description.abstractEcological area studies should focus on elucidating the dynamic relationships between environment and society, rather than describing human activities of a certain area on the basis of conventional knowledge of the environment, or conducting ecological studies within the framework of academic disciplines. A study of permanent banana gardens in the west of Lake Victoria, Tanzania, revealed that the land-use is controlled by both environmental settings and customary land tenure systems, thereby creating rather tight landscape in terms of utilization.en
