dc.description.abstract | This study examines the linguistic features of the Gršković fragment of Apostles (GR for short), an early Glagolitic manuscript found in the end of the 19th century on the island of Krk in Croatia. Although it is a discontinuous fragment consisting of four parchment leaves, GR is distinctive in many respects : in contrast to other Old Church Slavonic translations of Apostles which are in most cases aprakos, the original text of GR is supposed to be a full version; it is written neither in Cyrillic nor Latin alphabets, but in Glagolitic, and the letters used are of an intermediate character between the Macedonian-Ohrid type of round letters and the medieval Croatian angular ones; several phrases in Cyrillic are inserted in the margin to indicate the beginning and the end of a particular preaching. The language of GR is Old Church Slavonic, but a subtle shade of Stokavian can be perceived. Analyzing the features mentioned above, the author of this paper inferred that GR was transcribed somewhere inside the territory of the Bosnian Empire between the last years of the 12th and early 14th centuries. Contrastive analysis of the other apostle manuscripts from Bosnia, Serbia, and Russia suggests that there should be a preceding translation of the Apostles from the Greek original into the Old Church Slavonic. We can surmise that it was from an original source such as this that the younger GR transcription was derived. Indeed, the features of Glagolitic and the language used in GR are quite different from those of Croatian Glagolitic texts. Still there are some common characteristics such as the usage of ligatures and formation of several letters, which reveal the relationship between the early Macedonian Glagolitic tradition and the development of Croatian Glagolitic culture. | en |
