| dc.description.abstract | This paper aims at explicating the basic semantic properties of the adverb 'nakanaka' and the selectional/pragmatic restrictions deriving from them. Uses of 'Nakanaka' can be classified into two types (partly overlapping each other), namely, (i) as a modifier to a predicate taking a negative ending, and (ii) as a modifier to a gradable predicate. In the usage (ii) nakanaka has a peculiar co-occurrence restriction to the predicate it modifies, which is correlated to the marked/unmarked oppositions observed in scalar predicates. | en |
