Abstract

Transurethral ultrasonic scanning is useful for bladder cancer staging. Almost the whole area of the bladder is effectively scanned. As the tomograms obtained by this method are clear, the image of muscle layer, mucosal edema and the base of the tumor are detectable. Cancer staging was performed under classification of T1, T2 and T3 in the TNM system, by determing directly the depth of tumor in the image of muscle layer. In 21 cases, these findings corresponded well to the pathological stages examined by the specimen with the full thickness of the wall, except 2 cases.
