抄録: The American teaching assistant system has significantly influenced the teaching assistant systems of Taiwan and Japan. However, Taiwan and Japan developed differing systems for teaching assistants. Though there is concern in Japan that teaching assistants may become cheap part-time laborers in universities and colleges, Japan has actively implemented the teaching assistant system as a foundation for university and college faculty development. Conversely, Taiwan anticipates that the teaching assistant system will improve students' learning achievements and reduce the burden of faculty members. Intercollegiate teaching assistants (ITAs), who travel by school bus to regional colleges and universities to provide remedial instruction at regular times and fixed places, form the teaching assistant system in Taiwan. The findings of this paper are as follows: (1) the ITA system can effectively integrate the resources of teaching assistants in the region; (2) the ITA system can provide optimal ITA pairings according to the remedial instruction demands proposed by colleges and universities; and (3) the ITAs gain unprecedented teaching experience through providing remedial instruction.
