内村鑑三の再臨運動におけるシオニズム論と植民地主義

Abstract

近代日本における代表的プロテスタント知識人の一人である内村鑑三は, 第一次大戦終結前後に行った再臨運動と呼ばれる信仰運動の中で, シオニズム運動を支持する発言を繰り返した. その背景には, フロンテイア開拓を理想視するアメリカ的ピューリタニズム信仰があった. 世界的に帝国主義と軍国主義が進展するにつれ, 内村の理想主義的信仰における!日約聖書の終末イメージは強くなっていった. 内村のシオニズム支持は, 在接的には, アメリカの前千年王国論からの影響ではあったが, 同時に, 反帝国主義的な性格をもつものであった. しかし移住植民地における先住民族の権利を無視するという点とステレオタイプなユダヤ人観という点においては, ヨーロッパ・キリスト教世界の枠組みにとらわれ続けていた側面をもっていた.

Uchimura Kanzo, a representative Protestant intellectual in modern Japan, reiterated support for the Zionist movement during a religious campaign called the Second Coming Movement at the end of the First World War. In the background of this movement was the faith of American Puritanism which idealized the colonization of the frontier. With the advance of global imperialism and militarism, an eschatological interpretation of the Old Testament was emphasized increasingly. In that respect, Uchimura's suppmt for Zionism was directly influenced by American premillennialism, while its anti-imperial character reflected his own Pacifism. However, Uchimura's Zionism was trapped in a European Christian framework, disregarding the rights of indigenous peoples in settler colonies and condoning a stereotyped image of Jewish people.
