抄録: Royal Government of Bhutan (RGOB) sticks to the three basic objectives in agricultural development; to conserve the environment, enhance the rural income and attain self reliance in cereals and essential oil crops. Statistical Yearbook of Bhutan 2006, thus writes. Agricultural practices have changed tremendously over the years. Until a decade ago, agriculture was practiced on a subsistence basis.……Owing to the improved communication facilities in the country, there is an increasing tendency to go for cash crops like apples in the temperate north; oranges, areca nut and cardamom in the subtropical south.……Strategies to increase livestock and cereal production include the propagation and practice of double cropping of the paddy production and distribution of high yield varieties. In the livestock sector the artificial insemination covers not only for the Jersey breeds that are high yielding but also for the production of Jatsha and Jatsam that are local high yielding varieties. This field survey note aims to report a few efforts made to harmonize agricultural and rural development with the Government firm basic policy to prevent degradation of the ecosystem, a minimum of sixty percent of Bhutan's total land shall be maintained under forest cover for all time.
