Abstract

This article aims to introduce a program named KU-Bhutan. KU-Bhutan stands for Kyoto University Bhutan Friendship Program. KU-Bhutan is an outreach program of Kyoto University to promote the friendship and the mutual understanding of the two countries, Bhutan and Japan. Kyoto University has the good reputation for the field study of various disciplines. Bhutan is a small but attractive country in Himalaya. The first contact between Bhutan and Japan was the meeting in Kyoto, where Her Majesty the queen of the third king met two Kyoto University professors. Her name is Ashi Kesang Choeden Wangchuck. The two professors were Takeo Kuwabara and Johji Ashida. Based on the long history, KU-Bhutan was launched in 2010 as a new program to promote the field study of multiple disciplines in Bhutan. Bhutan was captured as an academic arena that could provide us the insight for the future of the world. There are five major areas: Health, Culture, Security, Ecology, and Mutual collaboration. This article introduces the aims and scopes of KU-Bhutan. It also illuminates the efforts since October 2010: KU-Bhutan has sent 10 missions of 71 persons in total and welcomed 2 missions from Bhutan of 12 persons in total.
